
Lumberjack Distribution was founded in State College, Pennsylvania in 1995, and moved to Toledo, Ohio in 1997. Since its earliest days Lumberjack has distributed some of the finest independent labels in the U.S. and Europe, with a primary focus on indie rock, hardcore, and punk.
Mordam Records was founded in 1982 in San Francisco, California, and moved to Sacramento, California in 2000. For more than 20 years Mordam has been one of the most significant independent distributors of punk, hardcore, garage rock, and indie rock labels.
In January of 2005, Lumberjack Distribution purchased Mordam Records to form the Lumberjack Mordam Music Group, with sales offices in Toledo, Sacramento, Los Angeles, and New York. Lumberjack Mordam Music Group (LMMG) works with an enviable network of independent record stores and distributors, both in North America and overseas, and also has strong relationships with major one-stops and national chains. LMMG has experience, know-how, and is perfectly structured to handle the distribution of releases that range from a DIY 7-inch that may only sell a couple hundred copies to titles that sell hundreds of thousands of copies. LMMG takes pride in its independent sensibility and ability to maintain that sensibility while providing professional and broad distribution services to its labels and customers.
LMMG works directly with hundreds of independent music stores, small chains, and other independent distributors throughout the world. We also have strong relationships with national chains and one-stops to ensure the best possible distribution network for the titles we carry. We have two basic groupings of titles: those that we distribute on an exclusive basis and those that we distribute on a non-exclusive basis. The labels for whom we serve as the exclusive distributor have access to marketing services, co-operative advertising, manufacturing support and guidance, detailed sales information, and our entire staff of knowledgeable sales and label support associates.
We have a core group of staff dedicated solely to working closely with our exclusively distributed labels to assure that their needs for the label as a whole and each release on its own are being met. The exclusive label staff has many years of experience in a wide range of challenges related to label operations, and can offer guidance to labels as issues arise. Our labels can choose to rely solely on our sales staff for getting their releases out into the world, manage their own sales processes and rely on us primarily for shipping and collections, or operate somewhere in between as best suits their needs.
LMMG has been involved in digital distribution since 2000 and has seen remarkable growth in this area since 2003 when the launch of Apple's iTunes store re-ignited interest in digital download sales. We work with an extensive network of digital resellers, including all the major players on the scene, and are concentrating significant efforts on continuing to expand our digital sales network and services to our labels. We expect 2008 to mark yet another quantum leap ahead both in terms of digital sales and in terms of the information and services we provide to our labels so that they may better manage their digital distribution strategies in this explosive new outlet for music.
LMMG offers our exclusively distributed labels sales and marketing assistance through in store programs, cooperative advertising in national magazines and one-stop sales books, and the option for full-page spreads in our monthly new release mailer. Through our national chain accounts we can offer significant national marketing campaign opportunities.
LMMG also has strong relationships with CD and vinyl manufacturers and printers, and our exclusively distributed labels can take advantage of our combined purchasing power to receive great pricing and priority service through these channels. In addition to the obvious advantage of pricing and service, these relationships benefit the labels in that LMMG can work directly with the labels, manufacturers, printers, freight carriers, and shipping and receiving points to assure the timely delivery of finished goods to various destinations with a minimum of fuss and confusion, reducing mistakes and delays in the supply chain.
In early 2005 LMMG began rolling out its long-planned web portal for staff and labels. Labels and customers now have access to a significant array of information and communication tools at any time of day or night via our online portal, and we will be adding more tools as the needs of our labels and customers continue to develop.
